What Pro Wrestling is Missing?

Hey all I am back with my fourth blog. In this blog, I am going to talk about the things that pro wrestling is missing. I am talking about the things that made people love the world of pro wrestling.

 Unscripted Promos
This one is a major issue with me because there are a lot wrestlers who don't actually get a chance to really speak their minds, instead they are being held down by lines. I remember a time that if a wrestler was being interviewed, he didn't remember some lines that he just read over, he actually spoke his mind. And those promos would show who was the cream of the crop and who wasn't. Remember when Steve Austin finally got the chance to open his mouth, he changed his entire career around in ECW when he was told just to run his mouth. Hell The Rock was a boring superstar until he was giving the chance to speak. These two were not given lines, they just said what was on their mind. Now when you look at wrestling, nearly every wrestling promo is scripted. These young guys are not getting the chance to actually speak and I don't think that WWE gets that stars can be created through unscripted promos.

I don't think guys should be able to have an open mic for the sake of having an open mic. It's unfair to use Stone Cold and Rock as examples. They were cream of the crop. How many guys left that are as good as Rock and Austin on the mic? Improvisation a rare talent that not many have. I don't think that Rock or Austin were just given a mic and sent out into the crowd though. No matter what, there are guidelines. Wrestlers should be able to improvise a few lines but it's called scripted entertainment for a reason. Two different time periods too. This isn't the Attitude Era.

Save I actually agree with you here:)

The Attitude Era was a time of desperation and Vince just happened to have five of the best mic workers in pro wrestling legend tied to contracts. Austin, Rock, Angle, Foley and Jericho. He knew he could give them a free reign or open mic, because he had so much faith and trust in these guys that they would work the sh## out of the mic when given to them. How many people could make "What?" into what it was? How many guys could've worked the "this is your life" segment? One of the best segments Raw ever produced.

Resrictions of the PG rating has a huge affect too. Guys who are good on the mic still have guidelines, Cena for example is a strong mic worker but as the "hero" Vince is carefull with what he says! There are only a few who have a reasonably free range on promo's: Jericho because he's Jericho, Orton becasue he's so fu##ing deep into character and Triple H.

Think back to some amazing promo's... Rock and Jericho double teaming against Booker, Steph, Shane and Rhyno is one example. "look we've got the gore and the whore" Y2J "the punk faced sucka and the silverspoon mother fu##er" Rock...... such promo's could never happen in todays climate and "the gore and the easy chick" wouldn't work would it?

I also feel that character development has a big part in this too. Guys who haven't found their character are unsure of how to work promo's. Take Randy Orton for example: back in 2004 only a few weeks after becoming the youngest champion cut a horrible backstage promo where he treid to be funny, mocking HHH and it bombed.... the crowd didn't get it. The kid had no idea how a face promo was meant to sound like... yet the Orton of today cuts the perfect promo for his character.

I do get your point though matey, the promo's do come accross a little stiff when they don't come from the guy working it! But today's product is so cartoon world anyway!

Oh and this is the second time I've wrote this... got kicked out last time! man thats annoying!

Anyone remember back in the 80's during commericals of Superstars of Wrestling or NWA's show that had promos with damn near everyone the roster to promote house shows. Back then guys had a chances to refine their craft. As the Attitude/NWO era came the promos got more unscripted thanks to the whole industry breaking kayfabe and taken more serious tone. Now you got writers telling guys what to say.
Difference I see is the whole sport has gotten politically correct which restricts promos but at the same time unable to go back to the play-in character promos of yesteryear. Its tough and Vince knows you can't put the cat back in the bag as much as he's trying to do. He would love to go back to the Pre-Attitude era promos since they would actually fit the product now, but there's no way today's fan would go for it.....or would they?
