How would you do it?

WWE's most controversial figure at the minute is John Cena. There is no denying that fact, simply put the man is  loved and hated in equal amounts by different fans. Now while Cena may not be the greatest ring technician in the world, his ability is generally respected, as the old phrase says "everyone loves a trier". However his character is a different story altogether. John Cena is a typical babyface, in the template of many great superstars before him, preaching respect, determination and a clean lifestyle. Normally these characters are fan favourites, even in the modern age with AJ Styles being a prime example. With Cena though the fans seemed to have made an exception. One of the most shocking moments for me as a fan before I got into the internet scene, was when I turned on Bottom Line one Saturday after New Year's Revolution when Edge stole his title using the MITB. Cena came out to cut a promo and was heavily booed, I mean I've seen Jericho get better reactions. It was only later that I found out about the IWC's hatred of the man and his gimmick. The debate always has been whether or not to turn him heel. Well I ask the question if they every do decide to push that button, how do you go about it? How do you turn the ultimate Babyface into a Heel?

My idea is fairly simple. Cena has been pushed as superman as some say, so to destroy the image of a man who never quits what you have to do is quite elementary I think. Imagine the scene, Survivor Series, Chris Jericho vs. John Cena WWE Title on the line. There has been a hard fought match going on with Jericho controlling the pace. Just then Cena begins his patented comeback, hitting the throwback, spinning back suplex and 5 knuckle shuffle, eliciting both cheers and groans form the crowd. Cena lifts him up for the FU, but Jericho wriggles out and locks in the Wall of Jericho. Cena struggles and tries to reach the ropes and just when he is within reaching distance, Jericho pulls him back to the centre of the ring. Cena with seemingly no other option does the unthinkable, he taps outs. The crowd is in shock. Jericho gloats in the ring with title and  the last image we see on the screen is Cena lying broken on the mat. The next night Cena comes out to the ring and cuts a promo talking about how the better man won and how hes using his rematch clause later in the night. The crowd is noticeably quieter than usual at Cena's presence, with the people generally still in shock from the night before. Later that night we have the rematch which is just as hard fought and as brutal as the night before, and just as Cena is gaining the upper hand, Jericho steals it with a roll-up with both his feet on the ropes. Jericho hightails it for high ground and Cena stands frustrated in the ring, the boos more noticeable than before as the people are shocked into silence of seeing there hero defeated two nights running.

The next monday Cena comes out to start the show once again, promising to come back fighting stronger than ever and earn his title back. However before he can finish Jericho comes to the ring. He takes the mic and runs the crowd down as usual before turning to Cena. He questions Cena asking him if these hypocrites actually support him and uses the example of the booing fans as evidence against them. He asks why does he pander to them when they turn on him so easily. Cena stands in silence and when Jericho gets in his face, instead of striking him he leaves the ring without incidence. Cena wrestles that night and wins and it is announced that he will face MVP at TLC for the number once contender ship. At TLC they have a great match exceeding all expectations. However once again as Cena is about to gain the win once again he is rolled up taking another loss. After the match MVP offers Cena his hand and after seeming reluctant for a minute, finally shakes it. Just as the fans seem relieved to have their hero back, he pulls back on the arm of MVP and decks him. After this we see a new Cena where he totally destroys MVP with a chair drawing a large red stain all over MVP's forehead.  Cena then leaves the ring not to partial but to total boos.

I know I have ignore Jericho's and Cena's match at SS and Jericho's tag team title but I needed a PPV to use as an example. The events of the blog take time sometime in the future hopefully sooner rather than later. I know with WWE's current booking style some of the events seem unrealistic especially the barbarism at the end, but with all fantasy booking one simple rule should be followed, "Make lots of assumptions and assume your always right" . Anyway what would your ideal booking plan for this event be? Can you think of a better way of doing it? Give me some feedback anyway and as usual I apologize for any and all mistakes in advance.

First off I like just about any idea that puts Jericho in a RAW title match, I just don't think MVP is over enough to accomplish this storyline...it isn't bad though.

Let's see, how about Cena and DX vs Legacy...HHH is just about to pedigree Orton when Cena blindsides him and HBK with a chair, grabs a mic and tells the fans it's time for John Cena to look out for John Cena, brother, and if you're not down with that i....nah, too 1996.

Ok how about this..Cena gets drafted/traded to SmackDown. On his first night (in Oklahoma City) Cena is interviewed in the middle of the ring by none other than Jim Ross, who tells Cena how glad he and the SD fans are glad to have him here on SD. Well, not all the fans...Cena gets his now-standard mixed reaction from the crowd.  Cena tells the fans it's time for a new John Cena and before JR can finish asking him what he means....FU right in the middle of the ring and Cena proceeds to beat the barbecue sauce out of good ol' JR in his hometown. A new show and a bloody JR just might do the trick.

What next? Cena comes out the next week to explain his actions and the arena goes dark...cue the Undertaker and a feud over Cena needing to be taught some respect leading to a match at next Wrestlemania...Cena wins the title early in the program leading to a finale at WM, title vs. career....surely Cena has to be the one to win and retire Taker and end his streak? Wrong...Taker wins and retires shortly thereafter, saying he has nothing left to prove at this point....or something, whatever.

Cena or Orton would have to go to Smackdown. I'm not sureĀ  if they would let Cena be heel on Smackdown.

JR just had a bells palsy attack, I doubt he's going to get in the ring to get his ass whooped.

If you turn Cena heel (which is a bad idea) then you would need to replace him with another guy who is insanely popular.  A couple of months ago this guy was Jeff Hardy, but even Hardy is a bad choice because of his issues.

Just to let you know I'm going to be very vague with who Cena is involved with.  If you want, you can input anywrestler you want in there.

If I were forced to turn Cena heel I would match him up against an insanely popular up-&-coming wrestler.  Let's call him FACE A.  FACE A would go on to defeat Cena for the WWE title.  Cena is then put in a number one contender's match for the WWE title but he loses that as well.  Cena then goes on to feud with HEEL A who constantly cheats to win.  Cena is unable to defeat HEEL A for several months but when he is about to, HEEL B comes out to help HEEL A defeat Cena once again.  During this entire process Cena loses his "indestructible" and "never quit" characteristics.  Cena then recruits a veteran face, FACE B, and they form a tag team.  Cena and FACE B go on to win the tag titles but eventual lose to HEEL A and HEEL B.  After that, Cena and FACE B are pitted against each other in a number one contenders match for the WWE title.  Cena loses again and attacks FACE B after the match.  Cena's attack leaves FACE B injured and unable to compete. Cena is put in another number one contenders match where he faces off against FACE C.  This time Cena is victorious but he cheats to win.  FACE C is upset and Cena takes him out of action as well setting up Cena v. FACE A for the WWE title.

Somehow I can only see one guy in that position-John Morrison. If they have to turn Cena heel, they could also put him on Smackdown and get him involved into the Vince-Undertaker storyline wherein Cena would represent VKM at WM26,he would be Vince's hired assassin .Turn him heel by getting Vince into a mid-card sort of a fued and have Cena run in and destroy Vince's opponent signalling the association between Vince and Cena.

thats even more reason to beat up jim ross!

but jim ross would have to do commentary on his own ass whooping tho. all the wwe announcers suck so they wouldn't be able to capture the emotion like jr would

The question of your blog Fegan was: How to turn the ultimate baby-face into a heel?

Well its been done before when the ULTIMATE babyface Hulk Hogan turned out to be "the third member". The invasion angle which morfed into the bigest faction of all time, the nWo was booke and time so fu##ing amazingly well that it turned the biggest hero of the wrestling world into the most hated man alive!

Its also been done when Austin sided with the most heted man alive, Vince... so it's not to be assumed into being impossible to turn John Cena. It would actually be really fu##ing easy!

All he needs is to manipulate the tweener reaction he gets from the crowds and to neglect faith and friendship of a top top babyface.

Team him with a top top face.... lets say either Jeff or Taker for a short mini tag feud with a couple of heels. For example if a pair of heels, and it really wouldn't matter who.... it could even be The Hart's or Legacy... but better with a pair of young up and coming punks to get these kids some exposure. Anyway have a pair of young heels to beat down Jeff/Taker on Smackdown for a week or two or even three, and have Cena come out for the babyface save. over a few weeks and into a PPV team him with Jeff/Taker to teach the kids a lesson and then at the end of the PPV match Cena hits Jeff/Taker with an FU and assists the young team with a huge win. Next week on SD in mid promo he jumps Jeff/Taker and locks in the STFU. Cena refuses to let go and the show ends with officials trying to break the hold.

Next week Cena cuts a promo saying "you wanna know why I did what I did? you really wanna Know Jeff/Taker? well I'm just sick and tired of being sick and tired of being booed out of arenas.... no matter what I do it doesn't matter! I never quit on you (points to crowd) but you quit on me long ago.... yet you (points to Jeff) no matter what you do Jeff, no matter how many mistakes you make... no matter how many times you fail, these people.... you people (points to crowd again) cheer and scream for you every single night at the top of their lungs for Jeff Hardy (spoken with sarcasm) and I'm sick of trying, pissing in the wind. THAT is why I did what I did, and I'll do it again!"

Leading into a very personal feud that can be worked over a 3 or 4 month period... You could even reveal the young team as his new sidekicks, that is was all planned!

I used Jeff in the promo because his past is easy to manipulate... same can be done with Taker.. slating the crowd for cheering for a man who burries people alive... hgihlighting how strnge it is that people cheer for a man who burnt his own brother alive, yet won't cheer for a guy who never quits for the crowd. and so on.....

Once you have anyone turn and beatdown a freind who happens to be a super mega over face then your onto a winner!

Similar to when Shawn who was a huge face at the time teamed up and made friends with Hogan only to Superkick him....

you like?

Best way to turn Cena heel? Have him turn on the one guy(Face) that has the best win/loss record against him and can be just as over as he is at times.....

well interesting topic my friends. I just can't even imagine a heel cena. Vicne loves Cena and will never turn him hell nor will he ever move from raw plus, with cena leaving raw or staying and turning hell, the only face main eventers are really DX who are kind of working the tag team scene lately.
However,
If it where to happen all you would have to do is make a brutal beat down on a top Face that he is mean to respect, have him rip on the crowd, and start using heel tactics and taunts. It just has to be dealt with carefully and patientlly and creative can't screw it up one bit.

I say Matt Striker would do a good job at that as well, he is one of the few announcers left that I feel can really connect with the fans, and i thought that that his partnership on ECW was one of the best in recent memory up there with Ross and Foley and Ross and Lawler.

There have been a lot of interesting ideas here, and I like the fact that no one has suggested turning Cena into his old rapping persona. I feel that he is too far into his career to go back to that gimmick and wouldn't cause fans to hate him, just become annoyed with him. I do like the idea of beating up Jim Ross and I think the one key feature in turning him is brutality. He has been Mr. Nice Guy for too long and for his character to be truly changed he would have to go out and KILL someone, its the only way i can see the fans buying into the change.

Seeing Cena return to rapping and fluffy hats would be like seeing Triple H start wearing the horse-riding gear again... now that would be funny:)

That would be immense, HHH coming out in full riding gear cutting a promo telling everyone its time to play the game, Croquet. Then breaking out the sledge hammer to use to hit the balls around the ring.
